We’ve been lucky enough to get mentions in a number of different magazine and on a couple of blogs in the last week. A huge thanks to Lisa for all the work she did – we love you girl!
Time Out: London
“A brand new night that launches tonight with one of our tips for 2010, Hyperdub’s Ikonika, in the top slot tonight with her groovesome and dark dubstep beats. She’s flanked by ‘the UK’s answer to DJ Shadow’, Paul White, and The Village Orchestra, with soulboy electronica and techno, while DJs including Another Amit (Man Make Music) dig through old school jungle to new school funky upstairs.”
“More good stuff at the Russian. State present hyperdub’s Ikonika headlining. Glitchy dubby hip hopster Paul White and Scottish electronic virtuoso The Village Orchestra provide the support. All are playing proper 2 hour sets”.
Borland is the ‘post-rock/electronica’ guise of Robert Gregg (aka Anclove) and Ian Breen. These two lads spend their days hanging around the bars and art houses of Manchester’s Northern Quarter and their nights planning to attack the ‘indie’ music establishment.
Borland will be opening the upstairs room at 2200 and bassment at 2300 on Saturday 30th with a up-beat iPod set. And hopefully we’ll be getting the lads down to do a live set for you all in the not too distant future.
Until then, here is my favourite track from their recently released House EP (available now for download on Bandcamp).
New, original, official, inclusive not exclusive; joining us at STATE on 30th January 2010, Orland Makebelieve. This is ‘The Diary of Catherine Real‘ put together by Orlando especially for you.
The night is drawing near and the excitement is building.
We’re hearing big things from all our artists. Ikonika will be showcasing work from her up-coming album to be released on Kode9’s Hyperdub label later this year. Paul White is gonna be taking you on sonic journey only he knows the details of. And The Village Orchestra will be supported by live Jitter visualisations throughout his set. With extended sets from all the above, the main room is without a doubt going to be sick.
We’re also pleased to announce a main room live set from Orlando M. He’ll be bringing his very special sound to STATE which we know you’re gonna love.
Down in the bassment, Man Make Music’s Another Amit and Quincey Real taking you through the night. They’ll be joined by Borland representing the Manchester-connection. And we’ll also be hearing sets from the Bruk family, and the Ruffage crew. Get ready for the party!
We’re gonna be loading showcase mixes up here on the website over the coming week, so keep visiting.
We’re pleased to announce that for our first ever event, The Village Orchestra will be supported on the night by live ‘Jitter’ visuals. It’s gonna be big, and looking something like this.
Amit Gudka a.k.a Another Amit is one the three original founders of London’s Man Make Music night. Together with Noel Mas, Sketchy and a whole host of other musical heads including our own Mikey Misi and Quincey Real, they set up one of London’s freshest, most versatile and most fun club nights. They individually and collectively introduced me and many others to people like Claude von Stroke and Sebo K.
After being in hibernation since their massive throw down in collaboration with Eastern Electrics on New Years Eve, Another Amit and Quincey Real will be joining us in the basement on Saturday 30th January for some viral musical madness.
To whet your appetite, here’s a warm-up mix Amit pulled together for the ‘Kevin Saunderson – History Elevate’ Album Lunch back in May 2009. Enjoy.
And then there was Paul White, sounding like what would happen if you let DJ Shadow loose in the BBC Sound Archives. To label Paul ‘UK Hip Hop’ is at once both totally inaccurate and at the same time absolutely spot on. I’ve pulled together a collection of mixes, reviews and even a free download for you kids to enjoy. Expect beautiful synths, soaring strings, jammin’ beats, glitches, and 70’s television samples.
‘No, no, no, a little more humanity please.’
Below is a guest mix Paul dropped on Mary Anne Hobbs’ BBC Radio 1 show from 12th January ‘09. Featuring tracks from Paul’s debut album ‘The Strange Dreams of Paul White’. (Be patient and let it buffer)
‘Filled with a deliciously deft aural trickery, you get the impression that only someone truly in love with music could have created it…’ From a review of Paul’s first album. Hear more here.
And finally, ‘19 weird and wonderful beat constructions fresh from Paul’s South London attic studio, known as ‘The Skylight’. Woozy, psychedelic hiphop from one of the most fertile imaginations of our time.’
You’re now ready for Ikonika. With an album due out on Hyperdub early-2010, we’re bringing Ikonika to you at the perfect time in her creative journey. Here’s a recent sample of her styles taken from the Unsound Festival in Krakow.
Our first event looks to be a good one. We’ve taken care to select artists from across the sonic spectrum who are developing new sounds and moving in new directions. In the main room, extended sets from ALL artists.
Ikonika(Hyperdub) 2 Hour Set – Dropping tracks from her upcoming album, as well as ‘post-garage’ choice cuts. http://www.myspace.com/ikonika
Paul White(One Handed Music) 2 Hour Set – The UK’s answer to DJ Shadow, this crate-digging fun-loving criminal brings his strange world to STATE, and we’re greatful. http://www.myspace.com/paulmw

In the basement, something differenet – The State Heads. 8+ DJs play music with one aim – to keep you keep you thinking and keep you dancing.
